History of Saint-Petersburg

Saint-Petersburg is one of the largest cities in the world. It is situated on the same latitude with Greenland and Alaska.
Peter the Great was sure that the future of the city would be splendid; he made a project of Admiralty by himself on 5th November 1704. It was constructed over a year later, in the autumn of 1705.
When in 1712 imperial court moved from Moscow to Petersburg, the city became a capital of Russia.
Stone buildings, built by projects of Domenico Trezzini are still the architectural basis of the oldest districts of Saint-Petersburg.
The main squares of Saint-Petersburg are Palace Square, Isaac’s Square and Senate Square (formerly known as Decembrists' Square in 1925-2008). They correspond to the single architectural ensemble.
The centre of this magnificent ensemble is the Admiralty. The weather vane in the shape of a small ship on top of the Admiralty's golden spire became one of the symbols of t he city.
The Winter Palace, built in 1754-1762 by Rasstrelly’s project is situated to the East from the Admiralty. Today, it is housing the Hermitage Museum.
Alexandrian Column is the focal point of Palace Square. The monument was erected after the Russian victory in the war with Napoleon’s France.
The Horseman, equestrian statue of Peter the Great, erected by Falconet, adorns the square. It is a masterpiece of European art of XVIII.
St. Isaac’s Cathedral is one of the most popular monuments in Saint-Petersburg. Its height is more than 100 meters.
Nevsky prospect is the main arterial highway of the city. It is the heart of the city’s cultural and social life. This prospect was glorified in many works of literature and art. The prospect runs from the Admiralty to the Alexander Nevsky Lavra.
Due to the intricate web of canals and rivers, Saint Petersburg is often called– “Venice of the North”.
